What happens to your document, what we keep, and who else is involved. The short version: your document is deleted within an hour and nobody reads it.
The part that matters
Your document is deleted within an hour. The Markdown you paste and the PDF you download are both removed from the server — not archived, not moved somewhere cheaper. Nobody reads them. They are not indexed, not analysed, and not used to train anything.
A cleanup job runs every five minutes, so the true worst case is a little over an hour rather than exactly one. That is why the wording everywhere says within an hour and not within the hour.
When the file goes, so does the name we derived from your document’s title. What survives is a row recording that a conversion happened: an identifier, whether it succeeded, how long it took, how big it was, and an error code if it failed. No part of your text is in it.
Who we are
The data controller is Martin Estanislao Escalante Leiva, an individual based in Argentina. For anything on this page — including a request to see, correct or delete what we hold about you — write to support@ownyourtool.com and a person will answer.
What we collect, and why
If you just use the free tool
- Your document, for as long as it takes to convert it and for you to download the result — then deleted, as above.
- Conversion metadata: an identifier, status, duration, size, tier, error code. Kept so we can tell whether the service is working.
- A session cookie, so the service can count your conversions against the hourly limit and know which PDF is yours.
- Your IP address, in the web server’s logs and for rate limiting. Not used to build a profile of you.
- A draft of your document in your own browser, so a refresh does not lose your work. This never leaves your device and you can clear it by clearing site data.
If you buy
- Your email address. It is the thing your purchase is attached to, and how you restore access later. It is not added to a marketing list, because there is not one.
- A payment record: the payment identifier from our provider, the amount, currency and status, and the notification they sent us. That notification can include your name and country, depending on how you paid. We never receive your card number.
- An entitlement record: that this address has access, when it was granted, and if applicable when it was revoked. The record survives a refund on purpose — it is what lets us answer honestly if a purchase is ever disputed.
If you tell us about unsupported characters
When our fonts cannot draw something, the tool offers to report it so we know which font to add. If you accept, we receive the names of the writing systems and how many characters were affected — for example Arabic: 12. We deliberately do not receive the characters themselves, or any surrounding text. One of them might be somebody’s name.
Analytics, and the recording you should know about
Only if you agree to it. Nothing analytical runs until you choose, and the code that would do it is not even downloaded until then. You are asked once, and can change your answer at any time from the Analytics link in the footer of every page.
If you agree, we use Amplitude to understand how the tool is used — which parts people reach, where they get stuck. Session replay — a reconstruction of the interface as you used it — is a separate choice, because agreeing to tell us which buttons you click is not the same as agreeing to a recording of your screen. You can accept one and decline the other.
The area showing your document is excluded from that recording, deliberately and in code. What you type is masked, and the preview pane is blocked outright. If we had not done both, the promise at the top of this page would not be true, so this is not a detail we treat as optional.
Amplitude receives a randomly generated device identifier, your approximate location derived from your IP address, your browser and device type, and the pages and elements you interact with. It does not receive your document.
One technical detail, for completeness: when analytics is on but session replay is off, the Amplitude client still asks their server for its recording settings before doing nothing with them. That request reaches Amplitude and no recorder is loaded, so nothing about your screen is captured.
Companies that process data for us
- Dodo Payments
- Takes payments as merchant of record. They handle your card details; we never see them.
- Amazon Web Services (SES)
- Sends our email — access links, purchase confirmations. Processed in the United States (Ohio).
- Amplitude
- Analytics and session replay, as described above.
- Duplika
- Hosts the application. The server is physically in the United States (Michigan).
Your data is processed in the United States, and by us from Argentina. If you are in the EU, UK or another place with transfer rules, that is the transfer taking place.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your data, and there is nobody we share it with beyond the processors above.
- We do not use your documents to train models — ours or anyone else’s.
- We do not run advertising, and there are no advertising trackers on this site.
- We do not send marketing email. We email about access, purchases and occasional service notices, and there is nothing to unsubscribe from.
How long things are kept
- Your document and the PDF
- Deleted within an hour.
- Conversion metadata
- Kept while it is useful for running the service. No document content.
- Email address, payment and entitlement records
- Kept while you have access, and afterwards for as long as tax and accounting rules require. Deleting a payment record is not ours to choose.
- Server logs
- Rotated automatically — a matter of weeks, not years.
- Analytics
- Retained by Amplitude under their own schedule.
What you can ask for
Write to support@ownyourtool.com and we will do it. You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, a correction, or deletion.
One honest limit: if you have bought something, we cannot delete the payment record while we are required to keep it for tax purposes. We can remove your access and the email address from everything else, and we will tell you exactly what remains and why.
Depending on where you live you may also have the right to complain to a data protection authority. We would rather you gave us the chance to fix it first.
Children
The service is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect their data. There is nothing here designed to appeal to them.
Changes
If this page changes materially, the date at the top changes and anyone who has bought will be emailed. We will not quietly widen what we collect.
